Step One: Preparing the Site

In positioning the palm trees, plant them at slight angles to create a natural, “windswept beach” look.
Once all the large plants and trees are in place, mound soil around the base of each one -these mounds will provide the substructure for the “sand dunes” that will give the landscape a realistic beach look.
Step Three: Beginning the Dry Creek Bed
To get the dry creek bed underway, roll out long lengths of weed cloth to cover the ground -this will prevent any dirt from mixing with the layer of sand that will be added. (cloth is sturdy and tear-resistant, but will still allow water to pass through easily.)
Cut holes in the cloth so it will fit neatly around the larger plants; to accommodate the smaller plants, simply cover them with the fabric, then cut the holes and gently pull the plants through. After laying out each strip and fitting it around the plants, stake it securely in place at all four corners.
Next, begin positioning the boulders that will define the dry creek bed. To give the creek bed a natural look, lay the boulders along the hillside in a scattered pattern that makes the creek bed look as if it’s emerging right out of the hillside. Note: For this project, use an inexpensive type of rock native to Northern California, but many other types of rock would also work well in this setting; for homeowners implementing the project in other areas, simply choose rock that’s indigenous to their particular region.
In order to dig out the cavities that will hold the boulders in place on the hillside, first cut out openings in the weed cloth large enough for each rock. With most of the beach-scape complete, turn your attention to the planting plan. The goal is to enhance the tropical look of the beach garden with low-maintenance, colorful plants that are native to coastal areas. Point out that planting the trees along the existing fence will provide additional screening border of the neighbors’ property.
Step Five: Finishing the Dry Creek Bed
To complete the creek bed, fill in the shallow basin of sand created earlier with “gold pathway,” a 3/8″ pebble that sells for about $60 per yard.
